A number of local organizations will set up tables and booths to educate and provide supplies for college students this week.
Point Park University’s Honors Program is hosting the LGBTQ+ resource fair on Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of Lawrence Hall.
Some of the participants include Proud Haven, Allies for Health, the Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR) and Planned Parenthood, who will offer free, confidential STI testing. Additionally, Point Park organizations will have resource tables set up, including the Gender and Sexuality Spectrum Association.
Event organizer Autumn Barszczowski is a senior public relations major. She organized the fair as a supplement to a mental health class she is currently taking with Dr. Sarah Schulz.
“[We were] brainstorming potential projects for my honors contract, and I had suggested bringing in external organizations for a panel or donation drive and Dr. Schulz had suggested holding something like a resource fair,” Barszczowski said.
Barszczowski had never seen anything like an LGBTQ+ fair in her three and a half years at Point Park.
In addition to resources for LGBTQ+ students and faculty, Barszczowski will also be collecting winter items, including hats, gloves, and coats, for donation to Central Outreach Wellness Center.
Students can bring donations to the resource fair, but, in addition, Barszczowski will be “tabling events during November solely to collect donations,” and “will always be accepting donations in the honors office” through the upcoming month.
