Hidden along heavily traveled Wood Street in downtown Pittsburgh is a rare European gem: Boutique La Passerelle, owned by Adele Morelli.

Q: What is Boutique la Passerelle?

Morelli: Boutique la Passerelle is a boutique in downtown Pittsburgh. It’s at 417 Wood St. It means “boutique of the runway” in Portuguese, Spanish and French.

Q: Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

M: I’ve been the owner since mid-August. I just purchased it from the previous owner, Cidalia Duarte. Cidalia was from Portugal, so she brought the idea to Pittsburgh to import clothing from her native country. So when I took over, we went to Portugal together and went on a buying trip. She showed me the ropes and how to get around, and the intention is to continue what she started here almost four years ago.

Q: So most of the clothing in the boutique is imported?

M: That’s correct. We import it from Portugal. The clothes are also from Spain and France and Italy, and we fill in with a lot of lines from the U.S.

Q: What types of clothing can shoppers find at the boutique?

M: You can find anything from a formal dress to a cotton T-shirt. The cotton is from Portugal. It’s really nice cotton. It wears well. It washes well. And then we also have our sweaters from Portugal. We carry the Ruga line – very nice, heavy, boxy-type sweaters – this year. And we also carry Free People and Miss Me jeans and Vigoss jeans.

Q: So other than sweaters, what can we expect from la Passerelle for the winter months?

M: Right now we are stocked for fall and winter, so as you can see we have a lot of sweaters, we have a lot of blouses, but we’re also headed to New York at the beginning of November to really fill in for Christmas season. So we have yet to see what’s coming.

Q: Are there any upcoming events for the boutique?

M: This Friday [Nov. 1], we are having college night to introduce a line of clothing that Ana, our boutique manager, selected for the college girls. It’s a lower price point so it’s more affordable because you guys are always here, and you want to shop, and this will give you a little bit more of a selection. Then we also plan over the holidays to have a men’s night where we invite the men in to do some shopping for the lady in their life. Ana will be the stylist and help them put together outfits or make a selection for a gift.
